If we want to stop Fortress Europe, we also need to take a close look to our own institutions. In the past couple of years, Frontex grew immensly. What started in 2005 as an agency with 43 staff members and a budget of 6 billion, has now over 700 staff members and a budget of more than 420 million euro’s. They have also established their own standing corps and bought equipment, such as vessels, drones, tear gas,...
Frontex is the militarization of our borders in practice. It has been under scrutiny of OLAF, the anti-fraud agency, the EU ombudsman, the EU parliament and several reports of Human Rights organizations have documented the involvement of the agency in illegal pushbacks and cooperation with the so-called Libyan Coast Guard. This needs to stop. It has gone so far that it is not enough anymore to just send 3 or 4 human rights' monitors. We need to stop this agency and instead invest the resources to policy and institutions that actually protect human lives and human rights.
