The European Green Party expresses its deep concern at the continued and
escalating use of force by the Iranian security forces, the bloody crackdown on
the demonstrations and the increasing number of civilian casualties. EGP also
expresses its deep sorrow for the dozens of dead and the large number of
injured, including many children, as a result of the use of violence by the
Iranian security forces. Τhe developments in Iran and the attempt to suppress by
violent means the protests that broke out, triggered by the death of Mahsa
Amini, on 16 September 2022, three days after her arrest in Tehran for violating
the mandatory use of the hijab, highlights a major democratic deficit.

Denouncing the attempt to restrict freedom of expression by restricting access
to the internet and social media platforms, and recognising that every person
has the right to live freely and to be respected regardless of gender, language,
religion, ethnicity and sexual orientation, the EGP invites the Iranian
government to take into account the appeal from the Secretary-General of the
United Nations towards Iran to exercise the utmost restraint, and on its
security forces to refrain from using unnecessary or disproportionate force, in
order to avoid further escalation.
Having regard to all the above and the remarks of the UN Special Rapporteur on
the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, of 18 July 2022,
and in particular with regard to the restrictions faced by women, the EGP:
- Condemns the violent actions of the Iranian security forces and points out
that the use of force which caused the death of protesters cannot be
justified;
- Unequivocally condemns the violation of human rights, including freedom of
expression and the right to protest, and the consequent undermining of
democracy and the rule of law;
- Expresses its undivided support and solidarity for the struggle of the
Iranian women and calls for worldwide support for the Iranian protesters;
- Adds its voice to all progressive voices around the world in support of
Iranian women and highlights their right to self-determination with regard
to their bodies, and freedom of choice;

- AM-33-6 Miljöpartiet de gröna
- AM-33-8 GroenLinks
- AM-32-1 BÜNDNIS 90/Die Grünen
- Emphasises the need for a transparent, impartial, and effective
investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Mahsa Amini;
- Demands the immediate restoration and full respect of the human rights of
all Iranian citizens without discrimination of gender, religion and
ethnicity;
- AM-41-1 Die Grünen

- AM-37-1 BÜNDNIS 90/Die Grünen

- Calls on all the Institutions of the European Union and its Member States,
as well as the international community in general, to condemn the actions
of the Iranian government and exert substantial pressure on it, demanding
its compliance with the UN Charter and this organisation's other related
resolutions.
Background
Mahsa Amini's murder in Iran was followed by protests against the country's authoritarian state, demanding equality, the right to self-determination and freedom of choice. The security forces in Iran responded with violent actions and force, causing the death of many protesters. We should stand by the Iranian people who are fighting for freedom and equality and call on the Iranian government to stop undermining democracy and the rule of law.
